Health Insurance

I have a HMO. I took the day off yesterday because I had two doctors appointments. While running around town I realized that I was lucky. Even though I have a HMO I have access to many great doctors because I live in New York City. After two really good doctor's appointments I'm thinking how great my health insurance is.

Today I had an eye doctor's appointment. I need a new prescription for contacts. The contacts I have are horrible, they completely dry out my eyes so I hardly ever wear them. This is what I found out when I went to the eye doctor. I do have vision coverage through my medical insurance, but it basically covers emergencies. I don't even have coverage for glasses. Since when is being able to see not a requirement for work? I can't believe regular eye exams aren't covered. Not even every few years or so.

My appointment put me back $75 (not horrible since I can use my flex spending) and I'm not sure how much my contacts will be yet. I'm testing out a pair now and depending on how my eyes do I'll go back and either buy them or trying something else.

I'm just slightly annoyed. It's like my dental, the only thing covered is cleanings. I guess I should be happy the cleanings are covered.

I had a similar challenge a while back, when I realized that my dental and vision insurance was much less than I thought. Ended up costing me $300 for crowns! (which should have cost $50 if I had chosen the right plan!) Live and Learn.

Vision coverage is always really limited. If you have an eye emergency then that is a medical problem covered by your medical insurance as opposed to vision. I have vision coverage and still end up paying several hundred dollars when I go for contacts, they really only cover the cost of the basic exam. Finding out your prescription, finding the right contacts, that is all extra. It's super annoying and why I only go every other year.

yep Eventhough I have PPO, I still have very limited perhaps none coverage for eye. Keep us updated once you get your contacts. I got mine from Walmart acuvue which is working great for me.

My vision coverage isn't great either. The exam itself is only $10, but the contact fitting fee is $50 and is not covered by my insurance. I'm not sure what the deal is with glasses because my prescription has barely changed since the last time I got a new pair, which was on my parents' insurance, so I've just stuck with the same ones. And I avoid the dentist like most people avoid gynecologist so I haven't even tried to get a cleaning on my own insurance yet. But other stuff is great with my HMO. I see any specialist for $10, which is great because I had to have a few minor skin surgeries earlier this year that would have probably cost thousands without insurance.

I have an HMO, and it's the worst! My company is getting group health insurance starting in March, and I'm hoping it's a PPO…

I've always been irritated with dental insurance. Your only covers cleanings?? I think mine at least threw in some fillings. It would lead me to look for some better coverage if it's possible.
